Book debut: Nature Journaling for a Wild Life

It’s here! After a year of planning and months of production work, I’m happy to announce my new book, which I’m really in love with.

Nature Journaling for a Wild Life encapsulates everything I love about nature and about nature journaling—and in a format that I hope makes it easy for you to learn and love this rewarding pastime. And yes, it’s part of a series I’ll be working on called Finding Yourself In Nature: The Wild Workshop Series, with more creative topics such as nature writing, poetry, and more.

Explore the enriching world of nature journaling in an eight-week, self-guided “workshop in a book.”

  • Find out how journaling nurtures a deeper understanding and love for nature while healing our digitally fractured minds.

  • Use drawing to learn about nature—the emphasis is on “drawing to learn” not “learning to draw.” And before you know it, your sketching skills will surprise you with how much you improve!

This unique book will teach you to:

  • Break free from the distracted life;

  • Learn about nature through mindfulness;

  • Improve your well-being;

  • Silence your inner critic and learn to sketch and write about nature.

  • Includes:

    • blank journal pages

    • quality metal spiral binding with full flip-back capability

    • hard chipboard back insert for easier writing and sketching practice

    • eight instructional chapters

    • eight weekly assignments and progress checklists

    • four information-rich appendices

    • tips and templates

    • removable viewing grid

    • BONUS: Mini workshop on how to make your own paint from locally collected minerals

I’m really excited about the printing: I chose to print locally and sustainably, even though this means a higher price. This is so important to me, not to have gone to China or a big, non-environmentally responsible press in a far-off state.

So Nature Journaling for a Wild Life is proudly printed in Tucson, Arizona on 100% post-consumer-waste (PCW) recycled paper by AZLitho, which uses 100% renewable power and is a certified member of the EPA’s Green Power program. Journal paper is 100% cotton (Bee Paper or Speedball Bienfang, 90-pound). Resources conserved:

  • 20 gallons of water,

  • 104 lbs. of greenhouse gases,

  • 17 lbs. CO2 emissions affecting ocean acidification,

  • .04 acres of trees, and

  • 9 threatened species. (Environmental impact estimates were made using the Environmental Paper Network Paper Calculator v. 4.0. For more information visit www.papercalculator.org.)

Praise from students:

“Each lesson is effective in building on the ones that have gone before. The process is clear and the time ‘flew’ when I was in that state of ‘flow.’ I found myself looking forward to the experience each day and enjoyed it very much!” – Susan Dragoo, photographer, writer, adventurer (susandragoo.com)

“I love this book! I had never thought of doing this before, because I can’t draw, but now I’m enthused to try nature journaling! The instruction, methods, and assignments are clearly laid out, make sense, and flow just right one into the next.” – Mindy Cox, hydrologist and botanist

“This workbook offers a well-structured and logical guide on how to nature journal. It lays out the process with easy-to-follow, positive instruction, and shares the joy you receive from practicing nature journaling.” – Marisa Rice, field scientist
