Cartography for Field Journals
I’m a huge fan of adding maps to our field journals—they add immeasurably to the sense of place, not to mention important data such as field locations, tracks, distances, and even species or important landmarks sighted.
The latest Exploration Quarterly (Vol. 1 No. 4, April 2025) features a 14 page tutorial and four different ways to add maps to your field journals.
This all-digital issue is presented in a lovely flip-book format online, including videos embedded. The cartography story includes a video tour of one of my journals and a multi-page flip-map of Baja.
Subscribe now at only $39 for a whole year of digital access to all issues, or $49 for 2 print-2 digital.
You can also find one of the map types—a sense of place map, shown at right—demonstrated in a free video (donation suggested) on the Wild Wonder Foundation’s website.
